Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens, better known as Queen Latifah in the United States is a rapper and actress. Her performance as a singer, music, film and TV artist has earned her the distinction of two Screen Actors Guild Awards and two Image Awards. She also was awarded an Grammy Award along with six additional Grammy nominations. Queen Latifah is the daughter of Newark New Jersey native. Her parents are Lancelot Sr. who was a policeman, and Rita instructor of Irvington High School. Her father and mother divorced when Latifah reached the age of ten. Latifah attended Catholic School in Newark, the state of New Jersey. She was also raised by the Baptist Church. Latifah is an Arabic word that means "delicate and kind". Her aunt bestowed it on her when she was eight. Latifah, a 5'10" tall power forward on the team at her high school, was always a tall girl. The play she played in her high school Latifah sang "Home" from The Wiz. Latifah was a beatboxer in The Ladies Fresh rap band. Latifah is among the original members of Flavor Unit, which was at the time a group composed of MCs led by DJ Mark the45 King. Mark James (aka DJ Mark the45King) recorded a sample of Queen Latifah rapper Princess of the Posse. He gave the recording to Yo! MTV Raps The Fab 5 Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music who was working for Latifah at the time was awed by her song. In 1988, she dropped Wrath of My Madness as Latifah's debut single.
